Questions Moderation Committee


The Question Moderation Committee plays a crucial role in maintaining the quality, fairness, and standardization of examination question papers in an academic institution. It ensures that all assessment materials align with the intended learning outcomes, institutional policies, and academic integrity standards.

Key Responsibilities :

1. Review and Moderation of Question Papers

  • Scrutinize question papers for correctness, clarity, and relevance.

  • Check alignment with the syllabus, course outcomes (COs), and Bloom’s Taxonomy levels.

  • Ensure a balanced distribution of:

    • Difficulty levels (easy, moderate, difficult)

    • Units/topics across the syllabus

    • Types of questions (short answer, long answer, problem-based, analytical, etc.)

2. Verification for Quality and Originality

  • Eliminate ambiguities, errors, or vague wording.

  • Ensure no repetition of previous years' questions without proper justification.

  • Check for plagiarism or copied content in question papers.

3. Confidentiality and Integrity

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all question paper content and moderation activities.

  • Follow institutional protocols for secure handling, transmission, and storage of question papers.

4. Standardization of Assessment

  • Ensure uniformity in format, marking schemes, and instructions.

  • Maintain a consistent structure (e.g., Section A: Short questions, Section B: Long answers).

  • Validate internal marks/continuous assessment plans if included.

5. Timeline Adherence

  • Work with exam coordinators to meet deadlines for:

    • Submission of draft papers by faculty

    • Moderation process completion

    • Final approval and printing or uploading

6. Coordination and Communication

  • Collaborate with subject experts, course coordinators, and academic heads.

  • Provide constructive feedback to question setters for future improvement.

  • Resolve discrepancies or disputes regarding question content.

7. Records and Documentation

  • Maintain records of:

    • Moderated papers

    • Comments or changes suggested/made

    • Approval and submission status

  • Prepare moderation reports for academic audits and quality assurance.
